One year ago this week - Lon and I were each hugged by a sweet gastroenterology surgeon with tears in her eyes after she told us what the CT scan revealed. In preparation for the biopsy she would perform the following day, she said, “I’m so sorry.” Things looked very grim, and the biopsy confirmed her certainty that the tumor was cancerous. The second CT scan just a couple weeks later at SCCA showed even further involvement with spots on the liver. All that set us on the course of treatment Lon has undergone since August 27 – every two weeks, with only two postponements – 25th time today.
Today’s visit was encouraging; with the tumor marker number
down by six points from last time – now at 31 rather than 37. Since the chemo’s negative side effects seem
to be lasting into the second week after treatment, Lon’s oncologist has
recommended that he SKIP the next treatment so he will be stronger (less anemic)
and feeling better for the scuba diving trip (to Hawaii!) his son Brad and
friend Aaron have been planning for him since his diagnosis last August. They want him to have the experience of
diving with them in tropical waters, and now that the blood clot that developed
last fall is long gone, the doctor has given him the okay to dive. Aaron has made all the arrangements, so the
trip is set for early September!
We were able to go camping last week for six nights with
friends and family – to Conconully, Winthrop, and three nights at Pearrygin
Lake after the state park opened up again after fires and power outages. It was great to have granddaughters, Emma and
Jessie with us all week; their mom Carol with us from Wednesday through
Saturday; and our son Brad and family camped near us the whole time. Lon’s brother Gary and wife Margo were with
us for the whole time as well. What a
blessing to be with them and with other camping friends from our church!!!
Our hearts are filled with thankfulness – and our eyes with
tears of joy – as we think about God’s grace to us this past year. Thank YOU for your love and prayers for us!!
Lon & Janet
